About Randy Koons

Professional Writer
Having spent a decade as a Sr. Proposal Manager, I’ve written responses to federal solicitations for IT services, winning multi-million-dollar contract awards. I've also published and presented peer-reviewed technical papers in the US and Europe, ranging from digital media to simulation-based training for first responders.

In addition to business and technical writing and editing, I write fiction and memoirs drawing on my diverse background and experiences to create engaging characters, dialogue, situations, and environments. I write essays with a focus on the relationship between technology and the creative arts. (Substack coming soon)

Eclectic Background
My career began as a traditional illustrator and graphic designer, working in advertising and print. As a draftsman I’ve worked with architects and mining engineers.

In 1978 I began to transition from traditional art and design into the nascent computer graphics industry, developing 3D simulation and animation software. I’ve worked as an executive producer and director in Minneapolis and New York City, creating computer-based animations and special effects for TV commercials, industrial videos, and litigation support.

As a multimedia, graphics, and animation subject matter expert, I spent six years at IBM’s T.J. Watson Computer Science Research facility in Hawthorne, New York. I worked with software engineers designing user interfaces for advanced multimedia authoring tools and digital editing and special effects for film and video. I demonstrated our technologies to postproduction facilities in Hollywood and New York City, and at industry trade shows in the US and Europe.

I was a principal designer of innovative simulation-based training for the National Fire Academy, National Forest Service, New York City's Office of Emergency Management, and other first responder organizations.

Over the years I’ve also been an art director, government contractor, underground copper miner, content development manager, maintenance man, logger, driller and blaster, and volunteer fireman. Currently I live in southern New Hampshire with my wife who is also a writer.
